The Saint Martin’s Fair (or Festival) in Mendrisio is a highly anticipated event held annually over several days, encompassing Saint Martin’s Day itself—November 11th. Traditionally, the fair and festivities take place on November 9th, 10th, and 11th.
This year, however, the event will run from November 11th through November 15th.
It is hosted at the "Prati di San Martino" (Saint Martin’s Meadows)—located on Via S. Martino, 6850 Mendrisio (Switzerland)—near the Mendrisio motorway junction. The fair is organized by the City of Mendrisio in collaboration with various partners. Admission is free to the public.
The Saint Martin’s Fair has ancient origins. As Mario Medici notes in his "History of Mendrisio," one must look back to 1684 to find the authorization granted to the town of Mendrisio by the Swiss authorities to hold the first fair in the meadows of Saint Martin.
The atmosphere is defined by the enticing aromas of small fried fish, chestnuts, mushrooms, cheeses, cured meats, and sweets, complemented by the vibrant colors of the artisanal goods displayed on the stalls. The sounds of fairground rides and songs sung in the refreshment areas blend with the lively hum of the crowded grounds.
Local associations offer simple culinary delights paired with the region’s highly regarded wines, sure to satisfy even the most discerning palates. On the terraces behind the church, some visitors head up to browse the display of agricultural tools and machinery, others to look down and take in the expressions of joy and merriment on the faces of those below, and some simply to enjoy a brief respite from the frantic pace of daily life.
